Stones Throw X Intelligentia Coffee
The collab to end all collabs
A few months ago an email came to us asking, "hey, do you guys like coffee?"
In what seemed like moments after the obvious reply, “yes,” a box arrived containing several bags of Intelligentsia's finest, freshly roasted & Burr-ground.* They were labeled Stones Throw Blend, Quasimoto Blend, Madlib Blend and Peanut Butter Wolf Blend.
Madlib got a bag of espresso, and not long afterwards finished 15 new beat tapes. Coincidence? You be the judge. Needless to say a friendship was formed.
Intelligentsia is like the Stones Throw of coffee roasters. They do their homework, deal directly with their farmers (bettering hundreds of lives in the process of getting those Arabica beans to their Chicago and East L.A. Roasting facilities), and churn out seasonal blends and single-estate offerings like we hock 7s and CDs. They even have a single-estate espresso. That’s the coffee equivalent of compiling Bruce Haack’s vocoder work onto one CD. (We’re doing that next.)
At Stones Throw's show in Chicago on April 30, and a few other locations on the tour, we'll have a few bags of Intelligentsia's custom-made Stones Throw House Blend. Want some? Check out the merch table. Buy something. Ask about the coffee. We'll see what's up.
*That's the way they grind it, yo. - Stonesthrow.com

Lee Fields & The Expressions - Ladies (MP3)
From the album My World, dropping June 2
Lee Fields is a bona-fide, 100%, unadulterated, pure, gut-bucket soul singer. His "legendary" status owes to his undeniably solid series of rare 7" singles (and one LP) recorded and released on his own independent labels in the 70s. Madlib recently jacked his “Flim Flam” drums for the TV on the Radio remix he produced. Now, the New York label/production team Truth & Soul currently in the studio with Aloe Blacc are ready to bring him to light with a brand new album of beat-heavy, deep soul ballads that will show soul-revivalists the world over what real soul is.
Recorded over four years, Lee Fields & The Expressions have successfully created a unique and personal sound that can hold court with the bands they set out to emulate. However, what they’ve created in the process goes beyond just a carbon copy of a sweet soul music from the 60's and early 70's. The formula has remained the same but the style has been adapted for the ears of youngsters whose experiences with soul began with Amy, not Al, Otis and Marvin. Thirty years of retrospection has colored this cross-generational melding of the minds. It sounds odd on paper, but the results are classic: hip hop-reared record collectors come full circle to produce an album of beautiful soul music with one of the progenitors who made it all possible. - Stonesthrow.com

Guru to Release new album "Guru 8.0: Lost & Found"
HIP-HOP LEGEND GURU TO RELEASE
GURU 8.0 LOST & FOUND ON 7 GRAND RECORDS MAY 19, 2009
On May 19, 2009, legendary emcee Guru (GangStarr, Jazzmatazz) and producer Solar will release their latest collaboration Guru 8.0 Lost & Found(7 Grand Records).“Solar and I have produced three classic albums (Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures, Jazzmatazz Vol. 4 and The Timebomb / Back To The Future). It was necessary for us to follow-up with another classic to keep real hip-hop alive. It’s been lost and needs to find its way. Here at 7 Grand, real hip-hop can still be found. We are keeping it very much alive!" exclaims legendary emcee Guru. "Our new album, Guru 8.0 Lost & Found, produced by Solar is like your GPS navigating you towards a higher place."” Solar adds, “8.0 represents that next level of growth; the next evolution of intelligent hip-hop.Lyrically and production-wise, it’s on another level.”
When it comes to taking hip-hop to the next level, Guru and Solar should know! After selling over 3.5 million records, releasing over 13 albums collectively worldwide as the front man for the revered Gangstarr, Guru, become the first artist to fuse hip-hop with live jazz, influencing the creation of Acid-Jazz and Neo-Soul sub-genres. An accomplished producer himself, Solar’s production discography includes the creation of tracks for Grammy Award winning artist and nominees like Damien Marley, Common, Caron Wheeler, David Sanborn, Dionne Farris, Angie Stone, Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Styles P, Slum Village, Blackalicious, Zion I, Aceyalone, and The legendary B- Real.
While Jazzmatazz fans are used to a number of outside collaborations on Guru and Solar’s previous works, Guru’s 8.0 Lost and Found, keeps it all in the 7 Grand family featuring artists from its roster: K. Born, Highpower, and Doo Wop with the exception of UK Soul Singer, Omar, who experiments vocally with the vocoder on “Ride.” The production on Guru 8.0 Lost and Found ranges greatly as Solar put his unique twist on a variety of styles from the classic hip-hop feel “Best Of My Years” to “Fast Lane,” a southern hip-hop inspired track that showcases Solar’s ability to rework southern bounce into his own playful creation. Usually behind the production console, Solar makes his first ever appearance as an emcee on “After Time,” an experience that the native New Yorker (not to be confused with Parisian MC Solaar) calls a “natural evolution.” Stretching sonically even further is “Divine Rule,” a throwback to hip-hop’s early beginnings when emcees used to rhyme over disco breaks. Guru speeds his flow up a notch for this song, proving he can still go toe to toe, flow to flow with anybody in the game.
While 8.0 experiments with everything from straight ahead hip-hop to disco and southern bounce, Guru is quick to point out that 8.0 isn’t another edition of the Jazzmatazz series. “This is not hip-hop jazz,” explains Guru. “This is straight-up hip-hop elevated to a higher plateau, so it shouldn’t be compared to the Jazzmatazz series. The jazzier side is a part of who I am as an entertainer, but doesn’t define who I am as an artist or as a lyricist.”
Together as business partners and co-founders of their own imprint, 7 Grand Records, Guru and Solar are creating a new blueprint for independent labels while elevating the art-form to a higher plateau. Their latest accomplishment, Guru 8.0 Lost and Found, is the Map quest that that lovers of real hip-hop have been searching for to find their way. So if looking for hip-hop’s new coordinates, turn off your radio, pop in Guru 8.0 Lost and Found, and you will find your way indeed.

WARREN G RELEASES 420 ANTHEM FT. TRAVIS BARKER - "LETS GET HIGH"
His laid back flow and production have made him an undisputed Hip-Hop legend, but those attributes and accomplishments have and always will certify multi-platinum rapper and producer, Warren G as a West Coast icon.
While many West Coast artists such as Tupac, Dr. Dre, and Snoop signed record deals with LA's Death Row Records, Warren G took an alternative route and signed with Def Jam in New York, quickly proving he had something remarkable up his sleeve. His 1994 debut album, Regulate...G Funk Era, certified Warren G as a multi-platinum internationally acclaimed artist, selling over 10 million units worldwide. He also received multiple award nominations (Grammy, American Music, Soul Train) for his smash hit “Regulator.”
Def Jam founder and the God Father of Hip Hop, Russell Simmons, would later cite Warren G's signing as “a turning point" for the storied Def Jam Records imprint and its subsequent mega-success. "After that, Def Jam never looked back," Simmons wrote in his book Life and Def. Likewise, as one of the first rap artists on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” Warren G helped put the West Coast on the Hip-Hop map with his success and by nurturing the careers of many other talented artists.
Subsequent albums Take a Look Over Your Shoulder (1997) and I Want It All (1999) were certified gold and generated hits "I Want It All" and "I Shot The Sheriff," a cover of Bob Marley's popular song by the same name. Warren’s 2001 release Return of the Regulator showcased his studio skills through working with legendary artists like Stevie Wonder and George Clinton (the two, alongside the late Tupac Shakur, are cited by Warren as some of the great highlights of his extensive collaborations over the years).
With five LP’s already under his belt, Warren G will release his sixth studio LP, Tha G Files, in August 2009 (an entirely self-produced effort) and in order to celebrate its impending release and mark 4-20, he is releasing a very special 420 promotion free download of “Lets Get High” (4:20 Anthem) f/ Black Nicc and Blink 182’s Travis Barker who adds his unparalleled drumming abilities to the track (“Lets Get High” will also be included on Warren’s upcoming Tha G Files LP).
"I wanted to do something very special this year to support the 420 movement, explains Warren G. "Marijuana has been proven to be an effective medicinal treatment for cancer and many other medical problems", he adds.
In addition, to the special 420 promotion, Warren will also be hosting and participating in a live online chat at www.warrengeezy.com & www.ustream.tv at 9PM (EST) tonight (4-20-09).
